Turning thirtyseven damn years today,

Yesterday night I went to listen to Jimmy Edgar dj set at the Parenti theater and was litterally amazed by how his music matched the Koyaanisqatsi videos projected behind him, especially the Bronx projects destruction sequence.
A deep dive in the electro music from the origins somehow.

This year's Design Fair is kickin'off in Milan and compared to last year's event, it seems that the nightime will be particularly busy.
Yesterday evening, the Elita Festival headquarters opened up thus permetting me to enter one of the classiest issues in town: the old Parenti theater which has been recently rebuilt will host a bunch of live acts and dj sets until sunday evening, dont miss the Dj Gommage team performance on friday evening and check the whole programm here.

On saturday instead, my dear friend Guillaume from the parisian Dirty Sound System crew will be playing saturday evening at the Bicocca warehouse for the Esterni closing party, you can find more infos here, and listen to their latest mixes on Fairtilizer.
Whereas tonight it will be Floating Points' turn to play there.

Truly a nice journey in such a good company and, even though it doesn't necessarly show, intense sport by the northern Italy's lakes, documented by Marco and Francesco.

Rhum was used for warming purposes only and yes, on can stay active after a huge meal of polenta.

Here we are again...After realizing i posted an uncomplete edit of the LowMotionMix, i just figured out i had to work a bit harder in order not to serve you the same dish twice.

Hi there you all!
Hope you're all doing at the best. I'd like to take advantage of this blog to somehow resume a fact which I really care about lately: my bike, or, should I say my bikes, since the family is slowly but surely growing. Some of you have asked me about my red single speed, having seen the pictures posted here, or me proudly riding it downtown in the last months. Some others have been quite surprised when they've seen me ride an all white track frame that looks as spoiled as can be and thus weights almost nothing.
So here's a little explanation, that hopefully will make things clearer for you who care but don't necessearly get the whole point, without annoying too much those who don'really care, and most of all, will stir you all to a good bike ride.

Single speed bikes: are called so bicycles without gear change, it sounds stupid, and it might be, but it's a basic aspect of the bicycle as we know it, except that since the 80s, wearing many gears on industrial and popular bikes like mountain bikes has surely become a commercial appeal: letting you think you'll never have to struggle against steepness or downhill high speed, and that you'll manage to find your way on all terrains, let's say that you somehow lost the habit, except for BMXs, to see bikes WITHOUT gears. Well, Singlespeeds are consequently a certain return to the simplicity of the biking geometry and mechanics system. They often come with just one brake, the front one in most of the case, for more reactivity, and can also be equiped with a coaster brake (retropedalage) by instance, that will slow or block the backwheel's cog when pedaling backwards. They are somehow being pushed as an alternative to the fixed gear bikes, offering a more reasonable way of transportation, at least a less hazardous one, for daily urban commuters. Their spoiled designs and studied aspect tend to make them look very nice. The retro touch comes as no surprise, since looking vintage is the best excuse for not wearing any of the technological stuff that's supposed to help you ride. Here are a few examples of this kind of settings:

Fixed gear bikes: a fixed gear is the total absence of gears, but also the lack of a coasting system that allows the rider to stop pedaling while driving, and that is usually found on any regular bicycle. This lead you to a diverse perception of the road, since you have to pay a lot of attention to what is actually happening in front and aside of you. These bikes were born on speed circuits, and their designs aim at more lightness, being reduced to the strict minimum.

The only way to stop is by blocking the back wheel. How? By forcing on the pedals to stop everything from running, pushing with the back leg, pulling with the front one, or vice versa, until you hear your wheel scream against the asphalt, and feel it slide behind you, as if it was attached to the bike and following it. Such craziness was majorly introduced on the streets of major cities such as New York, San Francisco and Portland, but also London, and Copenhagen in Europe, by bike messengers and this, except from the peculiar speed they can provide to someone who knows how to ride, for various reasons.

One probably is the fact that, in absence of a proper coasting system, you end up doing the pendulum at the street lights, playing the daring game of not taking any of your feet off from the pedals, and doing so you are able to relaunch yourself in the traffic as if you almost hadn't stopped. One can imagine the benefit of such a practice, for workers who spend 8-10 hours a day delivering packs, risking their life constantly at each street corner. Another one could be the aspect of the bike itself, spoiled as they are they might be a little less inviting for robbers, and those who might still be interested in stealing one could have a tremendous surprise after a couple of pedals kicks, and get quickly ejected from the rebelling tubes. But the main attraction i guess is the smoothness that you feel when riding one, fast when it's flat, slow if it goes up, the road becoming at that point what your legs' muscles can do about it, and not what mechanical systems can help you reach. I was reading this article in the excellent COG mag the other evening, where this ex-messenger was explaining how it felt when he first got attached to his fixed gear "rocket", having almost to slow it down, at the contrary of the usual riding which depends on how much you can force and endure to propel your tubes.

Nowadays, there's also a craze for the fixies coming from (old) skaters, and some of you might see me come to the point here, who are getting into this trend for the difficulty it represents in term of tricks and balance. Imagine hopping above a sidewalk, conscious that you can't at any moment stop your feet from going, even a fraction of second in order to find your body balance. Know what i mean my (ex) skaters friends? Needless to say that in such conditions, riding a fixed gear bike on a skatepark or in some pool surely deserves respect! But even without particular bumpy or curvy infrastructures, it is a fact that the geometry of the frames, the length and height of such bikes but also the mechanical simplicity they consist of are the main ingredients for turning these little bikes into flat freestyle instruments.

Apparently, fixies freestylers tend to train on monocycle, get it a little bit more now?

Here are a few examples to illustrate my words:

So one could obviously ask: What 's the benefit then, if it only represents more danger for a very common transportation mean? Well, to repeat myself, and from the point of view of a newcomer to that game, i could only tell you that it's the smoothness of your moves that makes it a riding pleasure. It's also in the lightness of the bike that feels almost unreal for being so spoiled. It's about the lack of metal gears clicking, and cables bouncing. It's about repairing your own bike when it needs it, without spending hours with your hands in black grease and threatening teeth for your fingers. It's all about simplicity most of all. And seen our modern complex lifes, you can get really quickly addicted to it.

SATURDAY 19th APRIL

We dedicated Saturday to first picking up a bike for my french host, then to visiting the VIA exhibition at the Triennale Museum with Antoine, who has already been invited in the last 2 previous years by this french institution, born to help young designers get in touch with the industry needs and thus providing new ideas on a quite experimental ground. Then saw some Karim Rashid's graphic designs, half way between new rave and psychedelic extravaganza, before aiming to the bar outside the museum to sit underneath the huge floral reproductions of some of Stark's main pieces designed for Kartel.
Then Saturday night, we all gathered at the Elita Festival Headquarter in via Montenero, where Pilooski from the DIRTY SoundSystem delighted an enchanted crowd with a killer funky mix after a mediocre warm up by your host.
It all ended up in Montegani 6, and i'll use the opportunity to greet our night guests, they know who they are!

FRIDAY 18th APRIL

Then began the visit of the FuoriSalone, in the Zona Tortona area.
I'll restrain my comments to some pictures, since it looked somehow obvious that there was no real innovations this year. Only the main brands like Tom Dixon, Marcel Wanders , Mooi etc were present inside the Superstudio warehouses, and we all felt like it was definitely lacking of some fresh ideas by smaller brands and studios.
Was it the increasing of the costs of the spaces rental that limited the presence of the usual creativity we were used to seeing, or is it the global oil crisis that weighted on this year's fair, this I can't tell, not being part of the business, but it seems one again that cyclic renewal in design trends only happens every two/three years.
Later on that friday, rain started pourring over the city, and thus partying came as a secondary priority, while drying our clothes and selves became a primary one!

Hi there!!
My intention during this year's furniture fair is to provide you with some daily report.
I said it's my intention, and i hope i'll be able, at least, to make a point as often as possible, if not daily.
I'll start today with a slight report on some musical guests who will be playing during the parties planned and set by my housemates and some friends.
Yesterday evening , MSTRKRFT has arrived in town. You may have heard of Death from Above 1979, well, they're the same guys, MSTRKRFT ( pronounce Masterkraft) being their electro side project. Their style is quite close to the Justice's sound or some equivalent stuff influenced and released since the explosion of the french duo. One could say that MSTRKRFT would have deserved way more attention a couple of years ago, when they started to release their first tracks and remixes. The EdBanger's marketing and connections may have somehow erase the originality of the canadians heavy beats and angry guitars riffs, and i felt like they deserved to be advised on this blog, for I really appreciate their stuff, on the heavy metal side as well as the electro one.

They will be playing on Tuesday night for the Nike Art of Football party at the Magazzini Generali, together with Sebastien Tellier, from France, who didn't show up at the Flow Festival in Helsinki last summer, but released his Sexuality lp in february which definitely is one of the best albums of the year, and Juan McLean, from New York, whose latest ep on DFA is called Happy House and that I highly recommand to all you (vintage) house music lovers.
Needless to say that such a lineup is grandly awaited by a crowd of many.

Don't let their masks fright you, these guys are pretty cool!

Look Ma, no brakes!

How to better start the summer, or how more pointedly, to better pretend summer's at the door, than by riding a proud and funky bike?
I've been feeling itchy for a while, browsing tons of internet pages about the fixed gear and single speed bikes phenomenon and obviously the sharp designs linked to it.

So here it is, thanks to Tiziano and Salvatore at Areabici in Milan, my first "wireless bike" which is not a fixed gear, since it has a coaster brake(you need to pedal backwards to stop the posterior wheel). It is single speed, and the nice cruise feeling comes from its huge 700c clinchers race tyres, and from its vintage handlebar...

I do hope this is the first one of a in a long serie, since once you start combining parts, you could (at least you wish you would) never stop! And since most of the components are recycled from older bikes, a bit of adjustment is always welcome! So here's a few pictures taken by a friend this week-end right after having picked it up at the shop. (Thanx Alison for the cool pix!)

I let you judge now, not before giving you a link to a new service which i recon is pretty cool and most of all quite efficient: as my friend Niko says, it's nice to see websites that do one single thing in a nice and effective way, so here's another newborn platform dedicated to the ever growing music sharing community: Muxtape. and a happy new year to you all!
Here's a symbolic upgrade to start 2008.
Last year i posted here the cover of an italian song, originally by Lucio Battisti, called the Veliero (the Sailboat) which was shorty after sampled by Lindstrøm for his Contemporary fix track. This song has encountered very incouraging feedbacks and some of you keep on, one year after, telling me about this re-discovery and different ways to enjoy it, going from endless car drives to tokyo subway's rides.

So here's another song by the acclaimed genius of the italian 70s variety, and this time again, it's a sailing topic that leads Lucio to deal with another kinda "boat"...I leave you now with Windsurf windsurf, an hymn to the pleasures of "la planche a voile" on the lombardian lakes...Listening to this track on a sunny winter's day like today would almost make you feel like springtime is at the door!

thanx to the french touch of Sebastian, and signed on the Parisian label EdBanger (oh what a coincideeeeeeence!!!...), while Bruno Bolla and the Gommage Dj Team, to which your devoted host proudly but still humily participates, will provide more chilled but still hot funky beats and electronic grooves, with an accuracy that made Bolla famous worldwide in a long career as an eclectic DJ, that started in mid 80's, and an obsessive eagerness for rare sounds and killer dancefloors hits that made the Gommage collective a thrill and an icon for "good parties" in last season's milanese nights.
Was that convincing enough?

Tenebreuse Justice

On my left, the young new international producers couple
from France, the spiritual sons of Daft Punk and Missy Elliott,
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Justice.
And here's
Phantom (Faex Edit), the EP that had it all started for them.

On my right, some of the most famous O.S.T. producers of all time, responsible for many of the best terror soundtracks ever, including a bunch for Dario Argento's flicks, Signore e Signori, the Goblin...
And here is Tenebre , from their eponymous album Tenebre, for the Argento's movie that goes by the same title.

Please take some of your precious time to listen to both of them, keeping in mind that the first ones are selling millions of copies of their album released this spring and are considered as very prolific and original producers from the electro scene, whereas Tenebre was simply written in 1982 (yes, 25 years ago) by Simonetti, Pignatelli and Morante.

I could try to set a debate here, trying to figure out wether what Justice does when ripping off Goblin's work is creativity or not; I just know that, as their elder brothers (or spiritual fathers) the Daft Punks, they are obviously and heavily influenced by the schemes and sounds of hip hop productions (wasn't France the only country in the world with the US to have a tv programm dedicated to the early hip-hop scene in the 80es? and hasn't its been for a long time (maybe still is) the second country in the world for rap productions?), but i'd like to point out that eventhough the work of rap djs and producers such as Premier, Dilla, Pete Rock, Dre, etc, is about searching, finding and reworking samples from older original tracks as well, hip hop always creates (created?) its style out of the repetitions of short loops, when Justice simply copies an entire tune to make a "new" one. Just like those guys recently covering Supertramp's "Breakfast in America", and making it sound like crap. The trick always seem to be: "let's make a cover from the eighties, kids won't have known it yet, they might believe we wrote this down ourselves!"
So instead of a debate, i'd rather go for a piece of advice, a warning that's been appearently almost forgotten, quoting the Public Enemy Chuck D:

It was musical, intense, creative, this I hope, and so so so relaxing.
Congratulations from the heart to Corado and Silvia, the happiest and luckiest newly wed couple ever met, to Niko and Salla for their exceptionnal welcoming in Finland, and to my new friends who I met there, to all the Miki's, Petri, Ilari, Kimi as well, to Kaj and Annali for opening us heaven's gates and having me spent some of the quietest and therefore richest moments of my life by the lakes.

Hi all,

Once again it's been way too much time since i last wrote down a line here. I do feel sorry, for it doesn't look really professional, or worse, not passionate enough, and quite jealous, also, for all my co-bloggers there on the web who are a lot more more dedicated than i seem to be about dropping my feelings daily on a white screen...
...But tonight i'm really pleased to be back to inaugurate a new section in this blog:
the "They say about us..." one , and i do hope there'll be plenty of those!
SO here's a short article written by Maddalena, a friend of the SMALL Night parties you've recently heard of here. I guess it just means that the efforts made so far to try to humbly enlight a Milanese night every once in a while, at least once a month, are finding a positive response, and are definitely aiming at more buzz! I let you judge by yourselves by reading the article and, and would like to use the opportunity to wish all the best to SMALL Nights. They might become big, who knows?
You will obviously read between the lines a call for dance-reaction planned for the night of the 22nd of March, at Plastic in Milan...Team Gommage will be waiting for you in the Bordello, as usual, for some more disco in forno!

I will happen this thursday at the club Plastic in Milan.
I personnally have been waiting for many years to get
the chance to see Mr. Theo Parrish, who'll be playing that night in the main room. And i am really curious about how the public will react to a mix of his soulfoull detroit techno and house grooves. Nox will spin before him, as an ouverture, and in the privé Mass Prod will distilate elegant
sea shore side minimal beats, while your host, teaming once more with Dj Parquet and Dj Tennis, (Gommage entre en piste!) will try to light up many fires on the Bordello's dancefloor.
Italian friends, hope to see you numerous there.

In the meantime, check this tune by August Darnell, a.k.a. Kid Creole, who used to perform with the Coconuts. It will definitely remind things to those of you who have present the musical productions of Mr. Parrish, for the others, it still is a nice introduction to the hypnotic rythms and loops that have made Theo's mixes so special and unique. The version proposed here is an edit by Todd Terje, who you all start to know by now i guess!

It means "Merry Chritsmas" in hawaian...pretty original, ain't it?
Needless to say that this is what i wish to all of you, dear visitors, together with a happy New Year, and hope you'll all manage to take advantage of this period of the year to have a good rest, fun moments and, obviously, the opportunity to listen to a lot of music.

My contribution to your chritsmas gifts will simply be a selection of my ab-fabs of the last months or weeks or in some cases, eternal ones. The tunes have been chosen to take you on a trip from my southern France roots with Isabella Antena, who i already mentioned here, read below if you haven't yet, then up north to Paris and the latest sounds of SebastiAn remixing Mylo, before coming back, since also holidays come to an end, to Milan with a powerfull tune by Ost&Kjex, who for once dropped the cheese topic to deal with the fashion models...a milanese specialty!

Am i getting a bit too allegoric?
This might mean i'm pretty tired, a bit stressed by the things i have to finish before leaving in a couple hours time, and quite impatient to meet my friends and family and spend some time with them after a crazy year made of pain, radical changes but also various successes.
So this one goes to my new friends, who i could rely on when i could have really felt like shit instead, thanks to you for your support, your kindness and humour, for all the good moments we had in the last months, you know who you are!
To my more historical mates: you know we gonna meet soon! Be patient...please!

Hello boys 'n girls!

It's been once again an eternity since i have written here for the last time, and i trully feel ashamed about it.
For this one i'd like to go a short month back in time, when Mr Kenny Dixon Jr aka Moodyman came to Milan for a stupendous dj set at the club Plastic. Although the big crowd of Detroit fans one could have expected didn't show up, the happy fews present that night have still enjoyed a precious mix by the Man, who combined tasty early house tracks and disco tunes in a very refined and oldschool way. We also could hear one of his most famous tracks, "Shades of Jae", hypnotical soulful release from '99 on his KDJ label.
And here, i get to the point: today's post is about the original tune "Shades of Jae" was built from and although Moodyman is famous for including samples of Prince in all his musical pieces, the original sample this time had nothing to do with the purple midget from Mineapolis. Instead he ripped an old
Bob James track off, called "Spunky", that I have the pleasure to have dug out and propose to you here in a comfy and PC friendly mp3 format.
The keys loop is purely killer, and still drives me crazy after all these years. And i hope you'll enjoy the original as well!

I hope you're all doing fine, whatever your situation, location and weather is...

On today's post, we'll pay a little visit to Brazil, while i'll give you the chance (or shall i say the privilege?) to download and listen to the amazing sound of Astrud Gilberto re-edited by a young genius I have already mentioned earlier here.

Ladies 'n Gentlemen, i'm giving you the talented and skillfull Todd Terje, hyding here behind his alter-ego name Tangoterje, and who reworks for our biggest joy and sonic pleasure, the mystical "Black Magic" by the mythical girl from Ipanema (athough born in Salvador de Bahia).

But first i'd really appreciate to share with you a short video, related to an earlier post: it was on September 27 th, at the Tunnel in Milan, the event was called the Dance and it definitely was a nice party ..Here's the opportunity (or shall i say the chance?) to live again a few moments of open bar, smiles an good vibes...

Since i haven't been writing down any line here..But the last weeks have been busy, lottsa changes in my life and diverse tasks to fullfill have kept me away from thinking about music, fortunately not away from listening to some more...
Today's topic is Isabelle Antena, who I'll proudly introduce as a co-citizen from Montpellier!! (Let me hear you holler, my southern friends...)
Isabelle released with her band Antena a very nice album in the early 80s, made of balearic and melancolic ballads, called "Camino Del Sol" on the "Les Disques Du Crépuscule" label.
It's been somehow forgotten for a while i guess, although it's always been a strong influence for many producers and Deejays. It's re-emerging these days thanks to a couple of recent remixes skillfully crafted by Todd Terje and Joakim. They've been published by the german and young yet excellent label "Permanent vacation", which i highly recommend you to start looking for.
So i'd like to propose here below another tune by Isabelle, an original one, which featured on her first album...
Hope you'll enjoy it. It's as sweet and tasty as an italian ice-cream, that Isabelle, plus, seems to appreciate, seen the number of friends she has on this side of the Alps.

Long live the Dance!
Here we go again: this wednesday, Kaput and Kramer will team up again, together with MassProd. for a bouncy and fashionable night at the Tunnel in Milan...Needless to say it's an honor to go back to one of this city's most appreciated "underground clubs" which has hosted in the past famous names such as Swayzak or Amon Tobin, eand to spin there for an entire night.
To celebrate the joy of the occasion, here's a good one: i wanted to make a quizz out of this mp3 post, but i wont: i'll just ask you to leave a eventual comment with the title of the original tune that Speaklow skillfully covers!

Hello Boyz 'n Girlz,

Here's an attempt for a new kind of musical post on Deluks, still aiming at reducing the gap between past and present sound.
It's about a song by a very famous italian artist, Lucio Battisti.
This song, "Il Veliero"(The Sailship, Le Voilier, quoi!) , was published on his album "La Batteria, Il Contrabbasso Eccetera" in 1976, and is quite a "groovy" tune compared to the rest of this artist repertoire.
What i'd like to propose here is an extended cover of this song by another old school formation, the Chaplin Band, from Netherlands, who released it in 1982
on a dutch label, Pierrot Records. Their version is quite similar to the original, which i highly recommend, but it's extended, and will thus probably remind you on the hypnotic and contemporary productions of the likes of Prinz Thomas, Hans Peter Lindstrom, Rune Lindbaek etc...
I hope yall enjoy it, and that you won't hesitate to comment on this!

Italy won yesterday, and my gentle kidnappers did let me go once i promised i would documentate the italian joy spreading in the milanese streets right after their victory...
Then they just funnily treated me once more before vanishing in the bushes.
The biggest surprise was for the early joggers in the park this morning!

A friend of mine told me a few months ago about the funny website last.fm has put online to create communities of listeners according to their personal playlists.
Since my friends ask me from time to time to update their musical tastes with a few advices on what to listen to, i figured out creating an account there could be a nice way to "share", at least visually, what is spinning on my iTunes.
So if you, dear readers (is there anybody at least reading this or am i just fullfilling my ego trying to come up with a few englishg lines?) , are interested in seeing what sound goes around and bounces to the pound while i slave at the office, then in that case you're kindly invited to check this out:
